OBERHOFEN CASTLE -  Lake Thun, Switzerland . 6.5" x 6.5" x 4.5"tall

Oberhofen Castle was built on a dramatic site beside Lake Thun in the 12th Century.  It originally belonged to the Habsburg family and has been constantly changed and updated throughout the ages.  During the Peasant Wars in the 15th century, Schloss Oberhofen was the seat of the Commander of the Swiss forces, who led the Swiss Confederated to victory over Charles the Bold at the battle of Murten.  He commissioned the frescoes in the castle chapel to show thanks for the victory.  Inside, there are paintings dating back to the Middle-Ages, as well as period interiors ranging from the 16th to 19th centuries.   Visiting the castle is to experience how a Swiss nobleman lived during the latter part of the Middle Ages.

The "English-style" park and gardens surrounding the castle are considered the most magnificent of the whole alpine region.  With its trees, exotic plants, shady arbors, and colorful flowers, the landscaped garden is an ideal oasis for strolling and relaxation.  The present garden was designed in the 19th century and offers views of Lake Thun against the magnificent mountain backdrop.

Oberhofen Castle is now a branch of Bern's Historical Museum and houses an important exhibition of Swiss living.
