The "PSYCHO" House is, perhaps the most famous structure ever featured in a movie. It was one of the "stars" in the Alfred Hitchcock 1960 thriller "Psycho". Although it appears very real to the numerous fans of the movie, it is just a movie set, built on the back-lot of Universal Pictures in California. However, there is a difference. This house is the only one on the studio lot that has all four sides in place, although inside, it's simply a shell. The art directors of the movie, Joseph Hurley and Robert Clatworth, insist the house is not, as some think, an exact copy of the house in the famous painting "House by the Railroad" by Edward Hopper. They say the house is actually based on the numerous Victorian Gothic houses found up and down the coast of California. Below the steps of the house is the famous set of the "Bates Motel" from the same movie. |
