The official name of Esztergom Basilica is
"The Primatial Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary Assumed Into Heaven and
At. Adalbert", The church is dedicated to St. Mary of the Assumption
and to St. Adalbert and is the largest church and the tallest building in
Hungary. Although disputed, it is also said to be the 3rd largest
church in Europe and the 10th largest church in the world. Ironically,
very few outside the Hungarian area actually have heard about this beautiful
landmark.
The present structure was built on the
foundation of several earlier churches. The architect was Pal Kuhnel
and work began in 1822. It was dedicated in 1856 and completed in
1869. At that time, the organ was the largest in Hungary. Today
the church is considered the most precious remaining example of Renaissance
art in Hungary.
Estergom is located on the Danube, about 29
miles northwest of Budapest. It was the capital of Hungary from the
10th to the mid 13th century and was also the seat of the Roman Catholic
Church in Hungary. Yet virtually nothing from this period exists
today. Esztergom, as it existed in the middle ages, now rests under
today's town, since the old town was destroyed during the 150 years of
Turkish rule.
