Yuantong Temple is located in Kunming, China.  This 1,200 year old Buddhist complex was originally built in the late 8th and early 9th century during the Tang Dynasty.   It lies at the foot of Yuantong Hill and is considered one of the grandest temples in China.

The buildings of the Temple complex are built around the four sides of a very large pond.  The pond is bisected by a long, delicate stone bridge with an elegant octagonal pavilion in the center.  There are beautiful reflections in the water.  The bridge and octagonal pavilion are depicted in this miniature.

Yuantong Temple is a working temple.  Along with the patronage of the local people, Buddhists from around the world come here on pilgrimages and to pay homage.   Throngs of visitors swarm around  the temple all year round.
