CESKY KRUMLOV

Located in the South of Czech Republic, Cesky Krumlov is a fairy tale town of medieval churches, castles and riverside fun.  It is the 2nd most visited town in the Czech Republic - after Prague.  Few places on earth are as photogenic as  Cesky Krumlov. It's built around a loop of the Vltava River, and features a maze of cobblestone streets lined with intricately painted, colorful Renaissance buildings with orange and red tile roofs underneath a beautiful castle complex built into the cliffs above. It's enough to make you fall in love instantly.  It's no longer a hidden secret – Cesky Krumlov  is very special.  You'll almost think the town was built by Walt Disney because one often has the feeling  that everything is so beautiful "It's not real".  And sadly you'll find it packed during the peak hours from around 11 am to 4 pm.

The town has about 12,000 inhabitants and since 1992 it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its well preserved Gothic and Baroque architecture from the 14th throught 17th centuries.  It's oldest settlement actually goes back to the Older Stone Age and the street layout from the Middle ages has been preserved.  During the Communist era, Cesky Krumlov fell into disrepair.  After the Velvet Revolution of 1989 the town decided it wanted tourists and the town's sights were restored. When you see the number of day-tourists visiting this small town, you'll see how successful they were.

Cesky Krumlov castle has preserved its Baroque theatre, built in 1680-82.  It is one of few theatres to retain its ORIGINAL stage machinery, scenery and props.  Due to its age, the theatre is only used three times a year, when a Baroque opera is performed in simulated candlelight.  Small groups BY TOUR ONLY are allowed to visit the props and the stage machinery several times a day.

View Terraces:  There are some amazing places to take beautiful panoramic photos here.  Located between the Castle Theatre and gardens is a small door along the brick wall that leads to a cafe and an incredible panoramic view of the city.  Across from the Hotel Ruze is a beautiful viewing deck of the city and the castle.

VLTAVA RIVER  During the summer months, canoeing or rafting down the river is an excellent way of spending a few hours.  Tours will take you and your craft upstream by van, and then let you float back into town.
